EU Directive against greenwashing
It protects consumers from misleading environmental claims, unreliable sustainability and practices related to early obsolescence.
Regulatory reference, not an application programme. This guidance sheet does not replace legal advice or prove compliance. Consult official publications and their modifications; consolidated texts are informational tools.
Why consult this reference
It serves to review advertising, packaging, labels, trade names, comparisons and environmental promises before communicating them to consumers. It requires special caution with generic claims, future goals and climate claims based on compensation.
What should be taken into account
It is not a seal or proof of compliance. It modifies the existing consumer right and requires national transposition: consults the applicable rule and specific case. Member States were to transpose it by 27 March 2026 and apply its provisions from 27 September 2026.
Scope, modalities and versions
- This sheet corresponds to Directive (EU) 2024/825 already adopted. It should not be confused with other European initiatives on the justification of environmental claims.
Strategies to explore
- Environmental declarations and material transparency
- Certification as a tool, not an end
- Life cycle analysis
Orientational thematic relationship. Implementing a strategy does not guarantee points, certification or compliance with the requirements of the programme.
