Energy

Experimental agrovoltaic unit on the Arkaute campus with electric self-consumption Added by EkoPulseNEIKER has installed in Arkaute the largest experimental agrovoltaic unit for arable crops in Spain (8,000 m2), with 212 photovoltaic modules estimated to generate about 163,914 kWh per year (equivalent to average electricity consumption of around 50 dwellings). All the energy generated is destined for the self-consumption of Arkaute campus, which significantly reduces its demand for electricity from the grid, in addition to studying under real conditions the compatibility between agricultural production and renewable generation.

Water

Forest management of drinking water supply basins (LIFE URBASO) Added by EkoPulseThe LIFE URBASO project, coordinated by NEIKER, studies the interaction between water, soil and vegetation in forests and applies forest management to the protection of human consumption water. In 2023 NEIKER monitored eight basins for the production of drinking water and, in four of them, it is modifying forest management towards a forest growing close to nature with permanent soil cover, with daily water sampling throughout the year to ensure sanitary criteria for drinking water.

Waste

NEWFEED: grape scrape as feed ingredient Added by EkoPulseInternational project of the PRIMA program with support and funding from Horizon 2020, in which NEIKER participates, to convert the raspon of grapes generated in wineries into food for cattle and dairy sheep and contrast their technical-economic viability. The raspberry represents between 1.4% and 7% of the by-product of wine production and can be reused in ruminant feed because of its high polyphenol content. NEIKER works on optimising the enzymatic hydrolysis process and establishing optimal levels of use in the diet.
